Australian Indoor Championships

Steve Garcia and Paul Murgia were flying the Club Flag at the Australian Indoor Bowls championships qualifying rounds at Karingal.

Playing in freezing conditions under the dome with the fog swirling around outside both accredited themselves well.

Given a tough draw in the round robin Steve Garcia had to play Brett Spurr from Melbourne Bowls Club who is a Vic state player , so Steve was happy to take him to a tie break for the third set and had his opportunities to win.  The match was telecast with viewers all around the world including England, Ireland, Canada and many from interstate watching an absorbing contest. After another 12 months Steve will be an even more formidable opponent. You can watch a replay on the NBTV’s Facebook page. (5600 people have watched this).

Steve’s second opponent was Ryan Drummond from Croydon a Premier league player in Melbourne and the same deal, Steve could well have won but did not capitalize on his chances and lost on the last bowl on the last end.

Both  players were extremely complimentary about Steve’s level of play considering his relative in experience. In fact Steve was as close as anybody got to beating Brett over 2 days.

On the other hand Paul was drawn against Matty Kurta from Beaumaris and Steven Englebright from Keysborough. After Kurta  withdrew Paul went on to beat Englebright in a tie breaker. Paul will now play Alan Ash from City of Frankston.

Chris Owen one of our dual members also won through to the knockout round where he plays Mike Pearce from Mt. Eliza
